Finding the Connections to Build Your Business

February, 2006

In past newsletters we have focused on issues closely related to business planning and strategy. Today we will address an important aspect that affects your ability to implement your plan; connecting with the 'right' people.

It always helps to have the inside track when talking with an investor or developing a business relationship to help promote your business. We have all tried the networking meetings, some with more success than others, but these take time, even though well spent. But we only have so much time and the local networking meetings can provide only so many contacts. There is an alternative, rather an additional resource, that is free and effective.

LinkedIn is a global network service with 4.8 million members. How can this benefit you? Let's say that you are in the food service industry and one aspect of your strategic plan is to sell your products to the commercial airlines for on-board meals. A search on LinkedIn for American Airlines finds over 200 people that work for American Airlines. As you review the position held by these people you find one that would be an excellent inside contact, "Product Manager, American Airlines, Food and Beverage Service Planning and Design". He is only 2 degrees of contact away from you; meaning you know someone who knows him. You request an introduction from your contact stating your intentions and the product manager likes your initial proposal and sets up a phone meeting to discuss it further. Not a bad way of doing business.

As the network continues to grow, so will the benefits you can realize. It's FREE for the basic membership, which is quite adequate for most users. Get started now by going to LinkedIn.com and join. You’ll immediately want to search your current contacts to see if they are already members or invite them to join of they’re not members. With a little effort you will be surprised how quickly your network grows. Search for me, Kylon Gustin, and request a link using my email address of kylon@brs-inc.com.
